Boston Globe reporting one marathon bomber suspect is in custody.

- mark 4-19-2013 7:39 am

someone elses alma mater may come off worse than sorority girls bitching about their lameness. that they may be some pseudo-marxist college kids is, uhhh, unfortunate?

After three days of investigations, the Boston Police Department has identified one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects as Ivy League student, Sunil Tripathi.

Tripathi, who is identified by a white cap in the FBI photos released late this week, was a philosophy major at Brown University, not far from Boston. He comes from a well-to-do family; his father is a rich software engineer.

The student went missing last month without a trace. The FBI became involved in the case, even though it was a presumed suicide.

Right before his disappearance, explosives were found near Brown University, however, they were destroyed in a controlled detonation. Police have yet to implicate anyone in the bomb scare.

Story developing.

"NBC says both suspects are not American born, have been here for a year with military training overseas. would debunk missing brown student."
- dave 4-19-2013 10:10 am [add a comment]

Suspects are brothers, 19 and 20. Not the missing student from Brown. Suspects location was narrowed to Chechnya. Living in US for almost a year.

Suspect #1 dead. #2 on the run. Area on lock down. #1 had explosives, #2 might also.

My brother and his family are 'on lock down' in Brookline MA. Police are asking their neighborhood - Brookline - to lock doors and stay inside. My sister-in-law just emailed me that helicopters are constantly overhead.

I keep thinking that what if this isn't the right guy. Could you imagine the fear?

- b. 4-19-2013 5:47 pm [add a comment]

  • seems highly unlikely. wouldnt you just give yourself up? guy that they took hostage when they stole his car said they admitted they were the bombers to him. talk about someone who may find religion. how and why they let him live is amazing.
    - dave 4-19-2013 5:57 pm [add a comment]

  • I wouldn't trust turning myself in with so much hate and anger out there. I think police would act on 'shoot first, ask later.'
    - b. 4-19-2013 6:02 pm [add a comment]

  • i would think so, but i can't imagine being the object of such a manhunt. i guess it's looking fairly likely. i was really hoping whoever did this would not be muslim.
    - linda 4-19-2013 6:04 pm [add a comment]

these are kids. ugh. i hope the fbi is right. seems so unlikely based on what their friends are saying of them. what a crazy situation up there.
- linda 4-19-2013 5:53 pm [add a comment]

b, i know. that's all i can think.
- linda 4-19-2013 5:54 pm [add a comment]

ive only heard it asked once but if they were in a firefight with the brothers and one was shot (and subsequently run over by the other), how did they let the other brother drive off and get away?
- dave 4-19-2013 6:32 pm [add a comment]

If the older brother had explosives attached to him, there is a good chance they are guilty. But I ran that thought too. Also as Dave said the brothers were witnessed being active post bombing. Also tweeting afterwards.

well, robbing a 7/11, killing a police officer/security guard, carjacking at gunpoint, throwing explosives at police, getting into a shootout with police and fleeing the scene, not to mention the explosives strapped to the body, would indicate they were probably guilty of something.
- dave 4-19-2013 6:54 pm [add a comment]

  • i knew i should have gone with "allegedly." i expect shoddy guesswork from reddit but the news media never met a fact worth verifying before they go public although they did show restraint on the brown philosophy students identity.

Have no idea what this means: Now they say suspects DID NOT rob 7-11. "A statement from State Police spokesperson Dave Procopio says 'the bombers did purchase gas at a gas station in Cambridge later in the chain of events and we recovered images of them there.'" Media reported robbery for many hours. But now raises question: Why did they shoot MIT officer, who it's said was just sitting in car and not approaching them--especially since they did not rob the 7-11 and being hunted for that?

    - dave 4-19-2013 10:28 pm [add a comment]

  • People have been using 7-11 all day. But I remember someone early on today correcting that it was a convenience store "type" place.
    - bill 4-19-2013 11:08 pm [add a comment]

    • now its being said that they were at a 7-11 as it was being robbed by someone else which is how they were initially spotted.
      - dave 4-19-2013 11:29 pm [add a comment]

Agreed, seemingly pretty guilty...

turn off the news for a few minutes. so much for capturing him alive. or perhaps not. stay tuned.

"Police have taken the cover off the boat containing the man believed to be the Marathon bombing suspect. He's not moving."

In a rare coincidence of accurate reporting and accurate usage of the word, one apparently correct thing reported is that the suspect is a “Caucasian” male. If any place is Caucasian, it’s Chechnya. And as I touched upon in this post 9/11 post (alas for the lost links of the early blog era) the area’s great hero was Timur, AKA Tamerlane the Great, namesake of the other brother.

Statement of the Ambassador of the Czech Republic on the Boston terrorist attack

19.04.2013 / 21:27

As many I was deeply shocked by the tragedy that occurred in Boston earlier this month. It was a stark reminder of the fact that any of us could be a victim of senseless violence anywhere at any moment. As more information on the origin of the alleged perpetrators is coming to light, I am concerned to note in the social media a most unfortunate misunderstanding in this respect. The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities - the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation. As the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman noted in his message to President Obama, the Czech Republic is an active and reliable partner of the United States in the fight against terrorism. We are determined to stand side by side with our allies in this respect, there is no doubt about that.

Petr Gandalovič

Ambassador of the Czech Republic

Other things Chechnya is not related to: Chuck E. Cheese, China, chin-ups, charades, "Ch-Ch-Check It Out" by the Beastie Boys.

"Authorities had previously said Dzhokhar exchanged gunfire with them for more than an hour Friday night before they captured him inside a boat covered by a tarp in a suburban Boston neighborhood backyard. But two U.S. officials said Wednesday that he was unarmed when captured, raising questions about the gunfire and how he was injured."

it struck me as odd that the owner of the boat was able to peek inside and see a lifeless body, but it took hours and lots of shooting after that to get him out.
- linda 4-25-2013 4:21 pm [add a comment]

I saw an interview with the boat owner. He used a ladder to check on the boat. Why he started checking was unclear. But when he looked in he saw a lot of blood and a body (still living). So he called it in. Then the authorities started securing the area and it took them a while to actually grab him after a lot more shooting.

suicide vest, bs. multiple guns, bs. tried to commit suicide inside the boat with non-existent weapon, bs. also the boat was inside the area that was cordoned off when initial reports said it was outside. amazing the cya lies and misinformation. does make you wonder who was in charge at the end and what result they would have preferred.

inside the carjacking. as i was wondering, even if he had not left his phone in the car, there was mercedes gps. they were really stupid not to abandon that car asap. clearly once their pictures were released they felt the end was near.
- dave 4-26-2013 7:01 pm [add a comment]

If the car was gassed up they would of headed to manhattan to get rid of their explosives. Gas ups thwarted by being closed and cash only, then they got caught up with by the law. Crazy back story unreeling here. Fucking w gps, cussing... Danny's cell phone, translator app.
