There is a market for exotic species, though keeping hummingbirds can't be easy; maybe in a greenhouse… They're not nice birds, at any rate; pugnacious and competitive, the males fight each other trying to keep harems, the females are prone to dalliances even so.

i didn't realize hummingbirds are exotic. our cat has killed 3 or 4 that i know about.

I don’t hate hummingbirds, I just think they take advantage of an undeserved reputation for being all sweetness and light.

 

Most of the species are in Central and South America, and no doubt there are collectors willing to pay for them. They don’t occur in the old world; Europeans must have been freaked out when they first saw them…

Brutal. What a long, slow process. The thing about birds being dinosaurs really hit me when I saw the videos of pelicans eating other birds, whole. Killers with plumage.
