From my weekly AARP newsletter.
In the study, six specific botanicals were singled out because data from the Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network identified them as the ones that are most likely to be associated with liver toxicity. These six supplements include:
- Ashwagandha
- Black cohosh
- Gardinia cambogia
- Green tea extract
- Red yeast rice
- Turmeric/curcumin
Researchers found that older individuals were more likely than younger populations to take these botanicals — and it’s not difficult to understand why. Turmeric/curcumin is often promoted to ease joint pain from arthritis, which affects roughly half of adults 65 and older, and black cohosh is marketed for menopause symptoms. Red yeast rice is taken to lower cholesterol levels and improve heart health, two leading health concerns among older adults.
While the six supplements above may be the ones most often implicated in liver injury, according to this study, far more fit in this category. About 1,000 medications and herbals are associated with liver damage, research suggests.
Angel Planells, a registered dietitian nutritionist from Seattle and a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, says other supplements linked to liver harm include:
- Kava
- Kratom
- Skullcap
- Chaparral

this father daughter combo have been doing this for nearly 5 years. thought my parent friends would appreciate it. they did not.
"i want to talk to that girl in 15 years and see what she thought about it!"
meanwhile my two parent friends had a passive aggressive screaming match in the car while the child screamed bloody murder not because they wouldnt take him to get a (second) stupid fucking happy meal on the trip but because he had to wait until after we had lunch elsewhere to make a special stop to placate him. dad wasnt having any of it. he got back on the highway and then 20 minutes later stopped at a mcdonalds. thatll learn'em. he sat in the car and smoked some weed, mother and son went to mcdonalds and i got us sandwiches next door at jersey mikes.
but this family needs parenting advice.
there was some click bait-y article about a "concern" over an easter candy shortage because one truck containing tons of a candy bar that to my knowledge no one has ever associated with easter had been hijacked somewhere in europe. got a lot of derision in the ensuing thread that it was bullshit and just overhyped for pr purposes. today im seeing stories in the financial press how the story has become a pr victory for the brand.
