THAT is an awesome find. But what about the interior details? I know it needs rehabbing, but how much?

note the skinny little cylindrical chimney on the left side. so by interior we mean floor boards and plaster walls. original stairs? very small footprint but they still come up with 2079 sf. colonial ceiling heights are also not what they are today. i see a privy structure in the far back end of the place. with google satellite i see a major industrial sight adjoining the north east property boarder w/ empty flee market tables? perhaps a gravel depot as train tracks run very near by. its front door is right off the gravel pike. on the upside it has a lake view across the street and right near a bigger lake and county park. its not far from the pa tpq and interstate 78. those pictures must be from last spring so its on the market a while.i may do a drive by a little later.

Justin is WAY too busy redeveloping his sites and creating several more... but he'd be happy to drive through this summer for a look-see and brain-storming session. He's done several houses of this type.

The very first thing you look for in a stone house of this type is the foundation. Are there cracks? If so, where do they come from, and where do they go? Not such a simple thing. Some problems are easily solved, and some can be downright nightmares.

Years ago, we did an 1806 townhouse on Hudson and 11th Street in Greenwich village, that had diagonal cracks (from settling) on the interior structural wall in the center of the house. All four upper floors had them, and patching wouldn't work. The problem was solved by using a 150-ton hydraulic jack, down in the sub-cellar, and each week we lifted the entire house by 1/4 inch, slipped a steel plate between the stone supports and main beam, and in six weeks all the cracks were gone. Easy-peasy. Even the floors and the staircase leveled out.....

Bill, I almost always agree with your taste, but that's the weirdest ugliest house I've ever seen!

thats ok i dont like brussel sprouts.

i like the house immensely. but its small.

I think the house is smashing, myself. It's unusual, and I can just see it restored. I wonder if the stone was originally unpainted.... if so, I'd sandblast the paint off.

interesting thing i found out about stone houses in pa. almost all were originally stone built and then plastered or stucco'd and whitewashed (lime). its latter day taste that leans towards undressed stone. many neglected upper bucks (the less developed area) are half and half with the mortar peeling off. in lower bucks (higher end more worked over area) some are self consciously restored with bits of plaster re applied in a distressed fashion. heres the cheepest stone house ive found so far.

Is that from your drive-by? You're right: it's original plaster-on-stone. Looks solid. I'm SO curious to see what it looks like inside. What's the town like?

I'm imagining three open floors with a line of wooden chairs up against all four walls.

Make it happen.

wish i could but im just window shopping, im not in the market for a purchase. getting to know whats out there and loving what im finding. and right that was from my drive by yesterday. come on out anytime justin and ill show you around. bethlehem is a crazy rust belt spectacle and as you see the staring prices are 20k and up. there just isnt much demand. heres a shot from the road that runs behind it. much can be gleaned from google satelite and also google terrain. the town is up gravel pike and on the right. a small grid of typical pa bricks etc. the lake is also just north and west as is the hiking park. a major quarry is further west. switch back and frorth from google map and zoomed in google satellite.

UPPER PERKIOMEN VALLEY PARK This quiescent setting of 600 acres in Upper Frederick Township with a sweeping vista of Deep Creek and Knight Lakes is a summertime mecca in the far western reaches for boating, rainbow trout fishing, and overnight camping, and the competitive sports of tennis and softball. The wintertime sees the heartier sports of ice skating, cross-country skiing and sledding, and ice fishing. Year-round the miles of trails are open to hikers and equestrians in search of the seasonal changes of nature.

I like it except for its right on the road. How busy is the traffic?
- ken 3-06-2009 4:34 pm [add a comment]

kind of busy but not all that damn busy. less than 1/2 acre. but it gets county park rural real fast. trout stocked lake, etc.
- bill 3-06-2009 10:44 pm [add a comment]

this place still on the market. lowered to $140k. make an offer! the river that runs behind the house accross the street is stocked with trout and should be visable from inside the house. the river not the trout. who wouldnt want to live at the corner of gravel pike and crusher rd. did another drive by yesterday. nice!
