new power finally turned on this week. one more well placed outlet in the kitchen would have been nice. but i "cooked" with two devices on simultaneously for the first time today at lunch and it felt like i was breaking the laws of physics. already invested in my first soon-to-be underutilized appliance. got it for about $200. so if anybody has smoothie recommendations.... if i ever actually make soup in it, it might be a harbinger of the endtimes.

Squash smoothie: Draw and quarter winter squash. Clean out squash guts. Bake for 45 minutes at 400. Drop to 300 for an additional 15 minutes. Plan for liquid coming out of squash. Use a roasting pan or a sheet pan with a lip. After it cools a bit, flay the skin off the squash. Dump flesh in blender with some stock. (Bonus points: use some stock to deglaze the squash juice that dries to the pan. Flavor lives there.) Puree squash and stock mixture. (Now comes the smoothie part.) Add some plain greek yogurt and blend. Spices? Salt, pepper, paprika, ginger are some good ones. Serve with some grated Italian hard cheese grated on top, and maybe some herbs. Store excess in freezer for up to 6 months, if'n you have a good freezer. Less if it's sketchy.

  • (Shhhhh! I'm trying to steer him away from the ruinous path of fruitarianism.)

    • zero percent chance of that happening. i was trying to steer myself away from the zero percent fruit diet.

came today. first smoothie was pretty weak on my part but the cashew milk, cinnamon, vanilla & ice slushie is pretty good. thats practically healthy, right? could use a little something more though. dont say alcohol.

frozen banana?

  • Was going to say. Sub frozen banana for the ice = rich and creamy. Chocolate too. And alcohol.

    • i usually freeze the bananas i just hadnt yet. just made one now: frozen banana, frozen blackberries, pineapple and coconut water. much better. but thats my goto. usually soy, or apple juice or yogurt w/banana, berries & often pineapple. i just need to find things outside that zone. not a big mango fan. see that in a bunch of recipes.

    • squash?

      - steve 4-10-2016 8:29 pm [add a comment]

    • apple cider is better than apple juice flavor wise.

    • carrot-ginger, carrot-pinapple, etc is a thing. and jumbo size juicing carrots are super cheep usually.

    • added this superfood powder to one just now. got this blend because of the immunity boosting properties and the vitamin d but the "tangerine" flavor which is meant to mask the generally awful taste is too strong. probably should just take a multivitamin.

banana, blackberry, vanilla yogurt, flaxseed oil. blackberries are $1.25 on the street in chinatown vs $3.50 via fresh direct.

was going to say, we are about to start the growing season and local in season veggies and fruit are cheapest and best ingredients. so, you should keep an eye on the farmers markets for bargains and surprises. china town sounds fun too!
