safari shading

I like Safari a lot and I am loving OSX (I waited a long time...the upgrade from OS 8.6 is gratifying to say the least). But here's one thing that's buggin me -- these simulated shadows behind the windows. Who decided we need tromp l'oeil in order to get around the computer?

They need something to graphically offset the current window with the ones behind it.

I'm sure there is a hack somewhere to turn off window drop shadows. My quick search didn't turn it up though. My guess is that most of the little things that annoy you on first switching to a new OS will at least fade to irrelevant after a few weeks of use. But that's different than saying Apple's choice is always the best one.

The good news is, brushed metal windows notwithstanding, graphic "eye candy" aspects of the interface have been consistently toned down with each release of OS X.

Maybe you'll be able to turn it off in "tiger". I just looked at Tinker Tool, but it's not there either.

You should make the picture you posted your desktop picture. The real problem with tromp l'oeil is that there's never enough of it.

It's not that I don't like it. I sort of like it. I just think its a major design decision. It's different than 3-d looking buttons, which makesat least some functional sense. this is much weirder. We have button and switches in the real world. But these windows don't exist except on computer screens. There's no referent for their shadow-casting abilities...it's a total invention.

Real World? What?
Remember how hard clicking and dragging was before computers? And shift-F9 rquired alchohol and a sudden head injury.

Plus undo! Man undo used to be so hard in the real world.

MB (who works in adobe land all day) says she sometimes tries to command-z (undo) in her dreams.

Adobe will do that. I've found myself "throwing" the command z move with my fingers while writing long-hand or drawing on paper.

Ever drag your pee to the trash in a dream?
I wish I had save as in real life.

Save As. Also Find. my left hand conducts Command Z nearly every time I open my mouth.

As a tivomaniac, it's the "pause" button and the "replay the last 10 seconds" button that I yearn for.

Good to see Microsoft is well on its way to copying this interface. Should be ready by 2007 (I'm not kidding.)

Gotta do something with those super-computing rendering engines that sit in the graphic display chips.

I know, it's really getting crazy how powerful those things are.

Do you guys offload data crunching to the GPU for your HD stuff? That seems completely exotic to me.
- jim 5-08-2004 11:22 pm [add a comment]

No, but we've thought about it. There are companies doing video effects generators that use the GPU. Effects that used to take big boxes of specialized HW can be done using off-the-shelf GPUs. And the GPU's have capabilities which can be tapped for decoding compressed video. But programming those units is a very specialized skill.
