  • I can't listen to NPR's weekend edition this morning. Those damn socialists are caught up in the orgy of Ronnie worship. They mention Iran-Contra (two!, two! impeachable offenses in one) in the context of "inevitable political problems". Yeah, felonies are inevitable.

But the topper is not one fucking mention of Saddam and the WMDs. Reagan and Bush 41 backed that two bit thug and provided him with some of the raw materials and equipment used to gas Kurds and Persians.

Ronnie boy was a footnote in the cold war, yet has gotten windfall credit for the work done by Truman, Kennedy, Gorbachev, Walesa and others. Ronnie was a central figure in the rise of Saddam, but no one dares say a word. SCLM strikes again!

maybe "bedtime for bonzo" would have said it all. i saw nancy reagan not long ago make an impassioned plea for continuing research into stem cells for things like alzheimers. it seemed like it was heartfelt. its unfortunate that her compassion was so selective but maybe it humanized her in the end. she also poo-pooed a reagan university. i got the impression that she had tired of his canonization by the conservatives. maybe she was just tired.
- dave 6-06-2004 1:35 am [add a comment]

Digby said it pretty well before we got the news of Reagan's death:

I've been worried about this. When Ronald Reagan dies, the Right and its media handmaidens are going to go into a fit of maudlin masturbation the likes of which the world has never seen. It will be non-stop GOP triumphalism from dawn to dusk. JFK's funeral will look like a trailer park trash $2,000 special compared to the spectacle we are going to endure for days on end. Lay in a supply of pepto-bismol. It's not in their DNA to handle this with any grace, restraint or class.

And, unfortunately, it will serve to reinforce the delusion that Republicans, even stupid ones, are the right people to lead us on the world stage. Reagan, after all, personally smote communism with one hand tied behind his back. Everybody knows that. And if they didn't before the impending canonization, they soon will. Unfortunately, he didn't have time to take out "evil" before he was forced to retire. Thank Gawd Crusader Codpiece is here to fulfill his legacy.

By the time we're done, The Reagan Cult headed by swami Grover Norquist, will have probably succeeded in renaming the country the Ronald Reagan States of America.

overheard on fox -- one of reagans most important decisions was to select bush41 BECAUSE it led to the selection of bush43. this, of course, was viewed as a good thing. i did gag.

also what did mike wallace do to make his son a conservative? did the devil demand the soul of his first born?

and i had similar thoughts about reagan. you know karl rove had to consider asking nancy to ice him until the election. alas, reagans final october surprise came too early. he never could hit his cues.

i think democrats should get on the reagan naming bandwagon. my first choice would be to rename alzheimers, the ronald reagan disease. perfect for the politician that elevated forgetting to an artform. personally, i would love to find a cure for ronald reagan.

From rtmark:
offering $3000 to "rename a major chemical weapons incineration plant after Ronald Reagan."

and...

"Launch a campaign whose aim is to amend the U.S. Constitution to declare a real name for the territorial entity currently called the 'United States of America.' This name that isn't one is used by the majority of the inhabitants of this union of States to use the name 'America' for the country, and 'American' for the citizen, thus dispossessing the other Americans (Argentinians, Brazilians, Canadians) of their continent. In the same way that the official name of Mexico is the 'United States of Mexico,' so the United States of America must decide on an official, real name for themselves. Public relations agencies and citizen groups may participate in this effort, which should result in a popular referendum or a vote of Congress."
- sally mckay 6-07-2004 5:51 pm [add a comment]

i think it should be called The "Original United States" of America. that way the mexicans and others of their ilk will stop trying to profit from the similarities with our brand. or we could subjugate the lot of them, not as easy as we remembered. damn you, digital cameras. if not for you, we could "liberate" with impugnity.

palate cleanser to rinse away the treacle: Democracy Now spent this morning doing some Reagan bashing. Remember the guy who called Mandela's ANC a "notorious terrorist organization", remember the doddering old fool who knew nothing about anything, remember the reactionary who called nuclear freeze advocates KGB or dupes thereof, remember the guy who authorized the state sponsored criminal/terrorist conspiracy known as Iran-Contra?

Ah Ronnie, we barely knew ya.

"Besides the postponed fund-raisers, Mr. Kerry canceled trips to Arizona, Pennsylvania and back to Ohio, all expected to be important states in the November election, as well as a visit to Colorado, typically Republican turf he is hoping to contest in the fall. He does plan to travel to Los Angeles for the Wednesday graduation of his daughter Alexandra from the American Film Institute, which will probably prevent him from attending Mr. Reagan's state funeral at the Capitol on Wednesday evening." Gosh Kerry, stay on the radar... Is this really the right strategy?

- selma 6-07-2004 10:27 pm [add a comment]

Yeah, what is this "national week of mourning" stuff? He was a mediocre President--a Hollywood actor, for cryin' out loud. Nothing against actors, just bad ones who run for office and then fool people into thinking they're statesmen.

- mark 6-08-2004 6:15 am [add a comment]

As for Kerry better or worse he only represents a step away from a bad direction. He may not or very well may not be the answer. I have always advocated a vote against this present Bush. Again as for Kerry, the only valid option (and hey, I love the idea of my heritage being represented by that lucid maniac, Nader, but I"ll say it in 04 as I said it in 00, a vote fore Nader is a vote for Bush) against the Bushmonster, probably the less we see of him the better ( for his chances at the perceived goal as President of the United States). As for Reagan, I remember thinking as a pre-dropout UTexas, I forgethisname punkassbitch trying to kill pres with a .22. Only pro's use small caliber and, Hinkley? right? weren't no pro. Do job right or not at all. As for the televised hagiography of Reagan I'm sure if it were available I would be watching it with all the horror of yall, but it's not and I'm not so all I can say is let the motherfucker be dead, he's dead. He ain't coming back, unless we forget to vote, 04. Selma been to Russia and we already got her thinking about this stupid American shit. Let's here about some stupid Russian shit.
- jimlouis 6-08-2004 6:39 am [add a comment]

I agree that we have to vote for Kerry if only to get rid of Bush. I have always been anti-Nader in the sense that we can’t afford to give him the votes. “Stupid Russian shit,” hmm, I am happy to report I sensed disgust with Bush in Russia, but when traveling you never know who you get thrown in with. I was with a pretty liberal group which probably was not representational. The pope photo op seemed to disturb a few people and was all over the papers. The translation I got was that they felt Bush was taking advantage of the pope and it was said, I am not sure if this is true, Bush’s advance team chose not to tell the pope’s people he was getting that medal (and they were furious after the fact) - in order not to allow him the opportunity to respond (wouldn’t it have been great if he called Bush a huge hypocrite). And Bush giving the pope the medal of freedom isn’t that a bit condescending, to say the least? But yes, I try to stay away from talking about this.

It was the white nights (not stupid but eerie and beautiful) something I have never experienced. I would look at my watch and it would be 2/3am and still the sun would be shinning, well, dimming, but still out and about.

heres a ron reagan jr. interview with salon from last year. wasnt he trying to be a conservative radio host at one point? he doesnt seem like one now. they seem pretty pissed about the stem cell research. i hope after the lionizing has worn down that the reagans tell the bushistas to swivel when he asks for their help during the election.

Reagan says his family feels particularly alienated from the Republican Party over its opposition to embryonic stem cell research, which could have significant benefit for Alzheimer patients like his father. "Now ignorance is one thing, ignorance can be cured. But many of the Republican leaders opposing this research know better, people like [Senate Majority Leader] Bill Frist, who's a doctor, for God's sake. People like him are blocking it to pander to the 20 percent of their base who are mouth-breathers. And that's unconscionable -- there are lives at stake here. Stem cell research can revolutionize medicine, more than anything since antibiotics."

My first moral-quandry-nightmare (that I remember) was about whether or not to pull oxygen tubes out of Ronald Reagan's nose, thereby killing him and, in my youthful naivete, saving the world. My second, dreamt several days later, was about whether or not to stab him in the neck with a sharp implement (which happened, in the dream, to be a pink felt pen).

The Reagan administration brought us the ``Star Wars'' missile defense, Ollie-mania, the ``Evil Empire,'' Iran-Contra and Reaganomics. A look at where many of the key players from those years are now. From AP, June 9.

I mentioned the holiday thing, with reference to Nixon, in my Presidents’ Day post. I think it’s an unwritten law that a holiday is declared any time a former pres dies. I don’t really have the heart to kick a guy when he’s dead, but I am bummed that I’m not working for the feds just now, as this is one I’d been counting on. How old is Ford…?

if ever there were a holiday for hypocrites, its tomorrow. its mourning in america. if you were a true patriot, youd have taken the whole week off. now fly off to your favorite tax haven for the weekend and dont forget to browbeat the help.
