ok, here are some of my other complaints. can we come up with some shorthand to refer to the disaster? ive seen "bloody tuesday" but thats a bit gruesome. "9-11" might have some staying power as it is the code for emergency. so where were you for 9-11?

also, can we finish canonizing rudy? about the only job i havent heard him considered for -- pope. where was pope john paul 2 during this crisis? now is not a time for prayer but for action.

guiliani only looks good because the shrub is such a mumbling bumbler. i say, thank god for colin powell, he seems like the only reasonable person in that administration. meanwhile, was i the only person mildly disturbed by bush speaking from the pulpit to the assembled dignitaries (and the viewing audience) at the national cathedral for his day of remembrance. maybe it would have been alright had the speech he gave not been so politically oriented. it seemed like an intentional effort to blur the line between church and state when those lines should be drawn all the more starkly.

lastly, what is up with NOrmalcy? i was taught that it was properly "normality" but the only instance ive seen it used as such of late was in slate. thank you jacob weisberg. (i later found an economist article that also used "normality".) i think merriam webster listed the first instance of "normalcy" for 1857 or so. one of the do-nothing presidents, i think harding (return to normalcy), may have popularized its use. i was wondering what the oed says about it. jim?

According to Talk Of The Nation and Brian Lehrer, Powell was out of the loop in the Bush administration prior to 9-11. (This was confirmed by Jim and Mr.Wilson) I suspect his position within the cabnet is unchanged.

  • i disagree. i think his stock has risen during the crisis. he has underscored the importance of patience and planning and has also stressed the importance of consensus building among the allies before acting. also he was the first federal official to face the press and he did so with aplomb rather than with pabalum which is bushs stock in trade.

  • i doubt he is a saint, in fact, (i think) i know he isnt, but dr strangelove, kid heart attack and vice-president bush league dont impress me as the core of a winning team. good thing that powell and condoleeza rice are rounding out the starting five. its a lineup filled with former allstars and overpaid and underperfoming draft choices much like our beloved ny knicks. expect a late season call up for rudy whos suddenly tearing it up in the summer leagues. he could be a potent sixth man. then they can put ashcroft out to pasture. i can see it now -- rudy guiliani -- the chancellor of terror -- our very own robespierre. well, maybe thats not fair. as far as i can tell rudy has been the picture of restraint during this crisis, not a saber rattler be he. actually, the robespierre chair for the study of terror at the university of schadenfreude seems to have been filled for the moment by those who would do us harm.

heres what consortium news is thinking about 9-11 and its aftermath.

Dubya's behavior on the other National Day of Prayer indicates he has little use for separation of church and state. I wish I could find Dubya's comments from a prayer meeting he held that day with leaders from the religious right. He's clearly a soldier in their cultural war.
