15 Green Cities 51
by Grist 19 Jul 2007 5:08 PM

These metropolises aren't literally the greenest places on earth -- they're not necessarily dense with foliage, for one, and some still have a long way to go down the path to sustainability. But all of the cities on this list deserve recognition for making impressive strides toward eco-friendliness, helping their many millions of residents live better, greener lives. If your favorite green city didn't make the list, tell us why it deserves recognition in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

1 Reykjavik, Iceland
Remember the grade-school memory device "Greenland is icy and Iceland is green"? It's truer than ever thanks to progress made by Iceland and its capital city in recent years. Reykjavik has been putting hydrogen buses on its streets, and, like the rest of the country, its heat and electricity come entirely from renewable geothermal and hydropower sources and it's determined to become fossil-fuel-free by 2050. The mayor has pledged to make Reykjavik the cleanest city in Europe. Take that, Greenland

Ominous reports are leaking past the BP Gulf salvage operation news blackout that the disaster unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico may be about to reach biblical proportions.

251 million years ago a mammoth undersea methane bubble caused massive explosions, poisoned the atmosphere and destroyed more than 96 percent of all life on Earth. [1] Experts agree that what is known as the Permian extinction event was the greatest mass extinction event in the history of the world.

Germany's 'Octopus oracle' keeps perfect record

It won't come as much of a consolation to heartbroken German fans, but at least Paul, Germany's now world-famous "Octopus oracle", has maintained his perfect record.
The "psychic" creature has correctly predicted all six of Germany's World Cup games and, amid excruciating drama broadcast live on national television on Tuesday, plumped for Spain, causing anguish up and down the country.
And the eight-legged soccer soothsayer was spot on Wednesday, as Carlos Puyol's header shattered Germany's dreams of winning their fourth World Cup.

Two plastic boxes, one with a German flag and one with a Spanish, were lowered into Paul's tank at an aquarium in western Germany, each with a tasty morsel of food inside. The box which Paul opens first is adjudged to be his predicted winner. But with classic fickleness, German fans turned against their beloved octopus after he forecast a Spanish win. According to "Der Western" daily paper, there have been "a host of comments on Facebook, Twitter ... suggesting Paul should be fried, barbequed or turned into a seafood salad or paella." "Others wanted to throw him into the shark tank," the paper reported on its website

"Walangila is an entrepreneur and produces a local drink called 'Rutuku'. In the photo she is bravely raising her arm. She is an excellent customer of the Uamsho credit association, and is a 44 year old widowed mother of three.

'Rutuku' is an alcoholic beverage made from a mixture of fermentations and manioc flour, corn, sorghum etc that are heated to over 180 degrees C, then passed through a flask connected to a chimney outlet made locally. The refined drops are then collected in a flask and cooled in order to create a strong whiskey-like taste that is appreciated greatly by her customers.

DMT
Unlike a great majority of documentaries produced today, DMT is a rare subject where the medium of film is essential to the story. The only way to convey the sheer importance and power of the rehabilitation process is to witness it either in person or through the camera’s eye.

this is a friend's film. pretty amazing stuff. they are trying to raise money to finish the project if anyone can help out.

Jemande is a male name given in the Garifuna island of St.Vincent. A rough translation of it is to learn something new every day: the concept of Jemande personifies general knowledge.
