and then there were three

Thanks for posting this. My question is how are the other two doing? I have walked by them pretty recently and they still seemed empty - it would be a voyeur’s dream if they were full - as none of them seem to have shades (not to mention thieves might be tempted by de Koonings and Matisses)…
I heard somewhere that Meier actually managed to have in his contract final approval of what type of shades tenants can use, pretty smart I guess. My first thought when I saw them was wow they are striking, but wait until the owners start imposing on the passerby puffy drapes and colored curtains.

uniform (if any) window treatments would be a must with ceiling to floor glazings. after seeing all the 3rd ave nyu dorm shit-arch of the 80's go up it was great discovering these beauties. offering the first two with unfinished interiors seems like a good idea. the art angle is a little nutty. i guessing ms sunshine got her name at a faith popcorn marketing seminar

thanks alot, here is that link to the deitch show. looks like there is still time to catch it. unfortunately, our container brother kalkin's work lacks grace. and like most of the other container architect/suppliers, they cant keep the price points low enough for the masses. im always game for a good haim steinbach piece though.

  • The show does seem disappointing. But I guess worth a look. I think you should design an interior to a container. If you did, what would it look like?

my inclination is to go with the way meier handled the first two towers, let the client determine their needs. this could be carried to the extreme by offering the container "as is" with the exception of cutting a hole and installing the sliding glass window/door egress. on the other hand, lets take as an example a dwelling made by clustering three 20' containers. two of the containers would remain unaltered inside and the third would include "off the shelf" mechanical features ie : galley (or efficiency) kitchen (sink, fridge, cook top, counter and cabinets), say aprox 10 running feet against one wall. ultimately a joined 4' x 4' (foootprint) lav (sink/toilet) and a 4' x 4' shower built-in at the non-windowed end (but those i consider luxuries). i should scan some cocktail napkin sketches for you.

i would only add furniture at this point. tatami mats and futons for sleeping in one container. clean lined table and chairs for eating and social gathering, clean lined daybed for social gathering. some modular storage. thats about it.

  • Very minimal. I like the idea of "clustering." you could create a nice interior outside space depending on how you postion them against each other.

  • hey! that looks great. Sign me up.
I was questioning the light (or possible lack of it) but this seems to have a lot of openness.

fret not - just glad you liked the design. 20's go for as low as $800 in newark and they are chump change per mile for delivery. i plant to scout locations this summer and hope to get to work on a small project by fall '04.

  • Keep me/us posted on the project.

  • ..or rather, I (I would say 'we' if I could speak for the others with any sense of authority, but that would be incorrect), hope you will...
