little steven garage essay

off topic:
So did you all see the inaugural piece by our new architecture critic?
"Gardens in the air where the rail once ran".
I think it shows that he has an understanding for the City, which is important to get across in a first piece (and he did pick one of my favorite topics - so kudos). But I did not get a strong sense of voice. A bit anticlimactic, in my humble opinion.

kind of wishy-washy so far. time'll tell.

Miss Representation's take.
(And in terms of the winners, I was definitely in the 'anyone BUT Holl camp').

The winning team, lead by Diller & Scofidio, includes artist Olafur Eliasson (I think his 'weather project' at the Tate has been mentioned here before).

Tom Moody and sally mckay's earlier posts are here.

I agree that that wasnt one of holl's best efforts. is your "anyone but holl" possition specific to this design or part of a larger holl issue? in general im pretty fond of his work.

I'm not sure what Bill's linking to, but I noticed a certain resemblance between the Tate Eliasson and a blockbuster movie of yore. And I disike that D+S proposal pic: why make something futuristic out of that funky old train track? It looks like the Galleria in [name city here]. And Keir Dullea? cheese-mo.

  • I went to the presentations given by the finalists (open to the public at the AIA Center for Architecture - the exhibition of all four schemes is still up). Liz Diller gave a great presentation. It seemed the most moderate of all the proposals - respect the nature and history while creating some exciting interventions... but yes, I agree tom, definitely some of the "futuristic" components are not too appealing (and can we really see a swimming pool there?) I think - if this ever happens - it will be scaled down.

  • seriously, the doable factor was almost completely missing w/ D+S the nearest to an exception.

Hi. Actually it was me with the faulty link. Maybe if you link to a dmtree site it doesn't work? Is there something I should know? Anyway, I did a general search and found you both - yes it was that link (http://www.digitalmediatree.com/?search=olafur). Thanks Tom Moody.
Bill, I guess it is a larger Holl issue, but some of his projects I do like. Helsinki, for example, I thought was inspired design.

Selma, you typed

a href-http://www.digitalmediatree.com/?search=olafur

between the < and >; if you add an = in place of the hyphen after href and put an opening quote before http and a closing quote after olafur it should work..

Opps. Typo. Fixed. Thanks.

"Dear Friends of Creative Time,

Nicolai Ouroussoff’s exciting article in The New York Times last Friday announced the preliminary selection of Field Operations and Diller, Scofidio & Renfro as the design team for the redevelopment of the High Line. Creative Time is honored to be a partner with this team to develop cultural programming. We have had the pleasure to work with Diller + Scofidio since our early days of presenting projects for Art on the Beach and 42nd Street.

We look forward to working with the architects and designers, the community, Friends of the High Line and the City to provide audiences with adventurous art experiences in this unexplored environment. The final design announcement is expected this September, and we will keep you informed as plans develop.

Enjoy the summer,

Anne Pasternak, Creative Time"
