the beacon beckons
Nice. I love the Beacon. On a slightly related note I went to the new Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center last night. Very nice room. The wood veneer covering the entire inside of the concert hall is from a single tree cut in Africa and then shipped to Japan where the layers were peeled off. It's pretty amazing looking.
Bad shot of the inside.
Wow to both. I grew up attending many concerts at both places. I'm especially gratified that the Beacon was saved, because I remember it was definitely in danger of being razed....
One of the baddest, best concerts I've ever attended to this day was a Blues Review back in the 80's, with, among many, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, and Johnny Winter- the surprise shocker was brother Edgar Winter came out for a set. Fucking awesome. We screamed our heads off. I have goosepimples just thinking back to that night.
was that the very early 80's, like 80? i think i saw that show too. i just remember over flowing toilets and ancle deep pee water in the bathroom. most of my concerts in nyc were at the academy of music aka paladium on 14th st.
If all you remember were the bathrooms, you musta been totally wasted, man! No, this was a few years later, like '84 or '85, I think.
The Palladium was a horrible place for concerts! I saw Frank Zappa on Halloween there, and Rush around the same time, and the acoustics were not appropriate for such loud volumes. In fact, I had to leave the Rush concert because it was so loud (and I wear hearing aids!). A couple of years later I ran into Geddy Lee in St. Barth's - I complained, and he agreed the Palladium sucked. Said it was too small. And then he said: Want your money back? We had a laugh. Nice guy.
My mother sez Diller Scofidio & Renfro collaborated with 3 form on the interiors of Alice Tully Hall. Awesome.
i am ready for a show!! Just tried to buy dali Lama tickets but its sold out:<((
Yeah, Ricardo Scofidio was there, as I guess he was every night of this opening week, just checking things out. I'm led to believe that Lincoln Center went a little out on a limb hiring them but it sure worked out.
Diller Scofidio were hired by Lincoln Center well before they completed the ICA in Boston, so they were considered a bit risky with such a big project, something like $160 million.
