It's a rare occasion—that Wow! moment—when art stops you dead in your tracks and makes you forget everything you thought you knew. I was struck dumb the first time I saw one of Cady Noland's corroded milk crates filled with useless automotive junk. No knowledge of Dada paved the way to that encounter or mitigated the powerful sense of abjection radiated by her distressed container, into which she had tossed a couple of Bud empties, some oilcans, and a "dead" rubber chicken. It wasn't the "shock of the new," as Robert Hughes described the riveting and alienating force of early-20th-century art. Rather, it was precisely because I thought I was on familiar ground that the rupture of the unexpected was so acute.

The door has opened wider for jurisdictions to legally take private property for a broad range of city improvement purposes, even when improvement entails private investment and ownership. Moreover, given this ruling and the number of obsolete private properties in urban America, the eminent domain tool is likely to be wielded more frequently by urban planners and elected officials.

For Riley, Wright was a true innovator, and for that, people are prepared to pay the price to keep his buildings going. "It appears to me that there are quite a few people who are willing to forestall the effects of time when it comes to Wright's work. The big problem is not the public structures, where there are larger resources to draw upon, but the single family homes. Even the most devoted and houseproud owners will find the costs to be a considerable burden."

and thats why wright's private homes carry only a 20% premium over comparable homes.

there was a national square dancing convention in portland during our recent visit. they were everywhere. it was like fear and loathing in portland with weirdly compelling septagenarians in mini skirts. these shots were taken at a promotional exhibition at the ice rink in the local mall

as usual there was special musical entertainment at the abaton garage gallery opening yesterday afternoon here in jersey city. the mark and laurie and friends band is called emerald tablets. there was something of a kali balu thing going on with laurie bortz reading a chapter from giordano bruno's on the composition of images, signs and ideas on top of the band's harmonium, zither and some kind of home made string instrument.

"the soaring glass-and-steel wings have been trimmed to mere stumps (think deli awning), and, worse, the entire project is now on hold pending the accrual of funds and the cessation of the architect's hissy fit. Storm, Santiago [Calatrava], storm; you have nothing to lose but your pride."
