I can't believe I never knew this one simple, yet reality shifting fact: Lupa is open for lunch. Every day. And it's not crowded. This is a significant upgrade to my already well fed lifestyle.

I went last Sunday around 12:45. We were one of about five tables. Went today at 12:00 and the place was half full. By 2:00 it starts to fill up, and when we left at 2:30 today there were people waiting, but go just a little bit earlier and you'll be fine.

The menu is 80% the same as at night. All the veggies are there (don't miss the cici and leeks.) The frutti di mare. All the pastas. The daily specials. But not the full entree list. Still, you don't really need all that for lunch. Grab a bottle of white from Elena Walch and you're good to go. Home by 4:00 for a nap. That's living.

I'll be there every week so consider yourself invited. I really can't express how great this is for me. I feel like I've moved to Italy or something. Big meal in the afternoon. Wine. Not too much work. I could get used to this.

Of course I'm also intoxicated by the weather. Outstanding.

  • I'll post here. Either Saturday or Sunday. 12:30 - 1:00 seems like the time to hit. We could even be a fairly large group.

Is either day better for you?

    • got lots of Vigneron in town, would like to do the next round--i ate there the other day and they have a new machine in the kitchen (i'll try to find out what it is) but we got sent out a scoop of bay leaf glob that was kind of like gelato which they serve w/ red wine--it worked--my guest loves this machine and wants one once he can afford it as it does all kinds of things....

We will be visiting Brooklyn in the summer. My daughter's name is Lupa and we are very excited to find SOMETHING with the same name. Where is it located and what is the atmosohere? Casual? Formal? Child friendly? Thank you from Montana

  • Lupa is on Thompson Street in the block just above Houston. That puts it in the West Village on the SOHO border. The atmosphere is casual, but the pace is frantic. The room and the food could be described as Italian peasant rustic. The staff is friendly, but harried. The prices are high, and the diners tend toward the foodie side, so even with the casualness this ain't no Olive Garden. Dressed down, but with a lot of buzz. Possibly the quintessential downtown NYC restaurant experience (as if it's possible to say such a thing.) Kids would be no problem.

Reservations are an absolute must for dinner. Don't even bother going without calling ahead (probably a few weeks.)

Worth the effort. Please let us know how you make out!
