just reviewing my fresh direct order prior to its arrival. they send an itemized bill once its on its way. one item stood out -- five dollars for two red beets. at 1.49 a pound thats 3.41 pounds for two freakin' beets. sounds like someones thumb was on the scale or theyre growing beets the size of watermelon, one of which is itself on the way. uncharacteristically, however, i stopped by the farmers market in union square, and guess what i bought, white beets, and beet greens, along with spinach and dill. and i also ordered some golden beets from fresh direct. so its three beet salad for the rest of the week and watermelon smoothies.

had some blueberry infused mead (in honor of beowulf) yesterday at spuyten duyvil in williamsburg. little bit of a hole in the wall but has a garden out back and a great beer selection.

babycakes on broome --

as an adult, I was diagnosed with an allergy to gluten and dairy, and on top of that, gave up sugar. Feeling robbed of the fulfillment that baking once satisfied, I set out to recreate the classic comfort of cakes from my youth. After a lot of experimenting and research, I mastered a few recipes that I began testing on friends. When they started putting in orders, for themselves as well as family and friends with allergies, I knew I was on to something, thus Babycakes was born.

His passion of the moment is Totten Inlet Virginicas — oysters native to the East Coast (Crassostrea virginica, to the Latin-spouting crowd), whose ancestors were brought west from the Chesapeake Bay a century ago. Introduced in 2004, they are raised by Taylor Shellfish Farms in a bay that opens off Puget Sound. Mr. Rowley, who helps to market them, gives them his nomination for "the best oyster on the planet."

i am actually "cooking" something, if cooking means throwing things in a wok on an electric burner. lamb sausage (for jesus), broccoli, white onions and cilantro. its like a resurrection for my colon. heres looking at you, kid!

went to one of the rapidly proliferating jamba juices today for the first time. pretty good smoothie and as far as i could tell, everything was fresh (as opposed to some sort of syrup but possibly frozen) but their veggie juices are almost nonexistent. the only vegetable they had were carrots. oddly they also had wheatgrass. otherwise everything was fruit-based. the boosts are a nice touch.

we ate awesome octopus in fried dough (aka arepa) in a fish market (shack) which is only open on weekends when the locals head to the beaches. buy beer from the small bar two doors down and grab some stools at the counter facing the water. great water views. it’s on route 987 near the marina on the way to seven seas/las croabas beach.

possibly the best chicken we ever had we bought from a man on the side of the road near our house. wow. lots of roadside pig and chicken being cooked, but again only weekends.

in fajardo, we had one *amazing* meal of fresh yellowtail snapper for lunch, but another meal there was just ok. they’re closed wednesdays and our best meal there was lunch on a thursday. maybe they spend wednesdays fishing?

in luquillo, we had a lot of fun on a friday night at victor’s place, right on the town square. some locals making music at the bar, great bartender, she makes a good rum drink. the food was mostly very good, some just ok. get the conch asopao (sort of like gumbo, traditional pr dish).

avoid sandy’s at all costs, which for some bizarre reason is supposedly the most popular luquillo restaurant. OUCH.

one place we wanted to get to but by the time we found out about it ryley was fairly burnt out on restaurants was in the mountains. supposedly pre-9/11 they used to get a lot of people flying in on heliocopter to eat the locally grown produce and meats. closed mon/tues. the views are supposed to be some of the finest as its in a mountain park. name is La Piedra in Aibonito, 1+ hour south of San Juan

another place that gave a good vibe going south on the east coast is truilo’s seafood in the area of punta santiago. heavy garlic but very classic and full of locals. we read about this too late to go but i bet its yummy, and the drive is fun and "local", pigs served roadside on that road

As for San Juan food, we dont know, I would just Google arround, lots of new places some I bet are good, some I bet are not, cant help...

i'm all for synthetic corks for wine, but i can never get them back in the bottle, and i've spent some infuriating minutes trying to shove one back inside. must i invest in some kind of goofy wine stoppers so that my vino keeps?
