shit. i have yet to meet my new downstairs neighbors but i already hate them. not only did the spend a bunch of money to make their kitchen look great but more disturbingly they are playing some bass heavy music in their living room which is below my bedroom. ive heard more music in the last hour than i have in the last 10 years. this will not end well. anybody know where i can sign up for a clog dancing class?

thinking back ive been really fortunate to not have to deal with this really ever. sucks because now i have to put something on to drown out the sound all the time and its just bound to escalate. and i dont want to be thinking about this all the time. i should probably just kill them now and avoid all the heartache.

It's usually the upstairs neighbors that make too much noise for the downstairs neighbors. Walking with shoes on on a wooden floor with no carpet or padded runner. A padded carpet can reduce your sound problem from them. But I imagine that not your esthetic choice. Them putting down a carpet also soaks up their sound too. info. we blew in sound reducing material in between floors for our condo conversion. They are probably picking up your music and tv sound FYI. Speakers should be off the floor if they arnt already. life in the city as they say.

Steve DB has a great story about waging sonic war on some loud neighbors.

that was a twenty year war.

build bigger bombs!!!

You know that expanding foam in a can? Works wonders for this kind of thing. Just drill a small hole in the floor, through to their apartment. Fill hole with about 500 cans of foam. Caution: building may explode unexpectedly.

i would have expected more from you, mark.

Your troubles are over. Get DiBenedetto and his buddy Frank to set you up.

called the vice principal (the landlord across the street) on them today (they were banging from about 8pm til 2am) not so much because i thought it would help but mostly because it was he that installed them in the apartment and i wanted him to experience my frustration. but also he would likely get word to them about my discomfort. i do feel like a bit of a tattletale as i chose not to confront them directly. its not their fault really. there is just nothing to dampen the sound. (i was already concerned that i would be the loud one and now that ill be a hypocrite.) they had a few friends over and i could hear the yelps from the conversation practically as if it were in an adjoining room which essentially it is. eventually i had to move my bed into the other room which i may have to do permanently but i prefer it the way it is and hate that the most annoying person gets to dictate terms. mostly i just want to stop thinking about it because its put me completely on edge.

Tough situation. You are the long termer at this point. You should register problems with management. Sit back and watch. Confrontation is a fools game. Save it for when everything else fails. Moving your room short term is a good idea. Any building noise after 10 pm should be on headphones. 10 pm sound moratorium.

sorry to HEAR
- Skinny 9-28-2013 1:49 am [add a comment]

shhHHH!

yeah, 10pm is completely unrealistic and they are a couple so headphones are as well to a degree. its more a matter of volume control and speaker placement ideally. my best hope is that they arent around that much and once they get a tv hookup that will cut into music time. still i may need to invest in some of these for the worst of it.
- dave 9-28-2013 2:05 am [add a comment]

that sucks. i say go talk to them. they may have no clue they are bothering you and if they know, they will likely tone it down. most people are decent.

that is a perfect example of why women are ill equip to rule the world. im gonna use the us-iran relationship as a template. first im gonna support a coup, prop up a dictator, endure a revolution and a hostage crisis then 34 years of proxy wars and fulminations before calling them as they speed off to the airport to open up negotiations.

Anything new on the noise front?
- bill 10-11-2013 4:44 pm [add a comment]

i rearranged my apt yesterday after another noisy night. the middle room at the moment is a dead zone as i still have no sofa. guess id eventually move the tv in there when i do but for now its part of the executive bedroom suite if one can be so with the mattress on the floor.

my hope that them getting tv would mitigate the noise was proved incorrect as a late night movie proved to be just as bad if not worse as it was fed through the home system.

crafted but did not deliver one exasperated letter but would prefer electronic communication if possible.

either were out of town or got home late last night so had a night off from annoyance but every slammed door leaves me expectant of the end of my peace of mind.

A deep pile carpet with an additional carpet pad in that room may help. Check out abc carpet for a good looking area rug (deep pile) that fills most of the room. Then try and hit up Sarah for an employee discount! Carpet pads are cheep from home depot and off the shelf sizes can be cut and duct taped to be the right size, just smaller than the real rug. Good luck.

elephant bark looks promising. No need for adhesive. As an under carpet pad.

is anyone under them? how many apartments in your building?

- linda 10-13-2013 7:21 am [add a comment]

  • yeah, a multi-generational chinese immigrant family. ok, i dont actually know they are a family but the range is from like 7 to 77 and ill hazard a guess that there are 7 of them. despite the present discomfort they will never complain though i am tempted when i see one on the staircase to try to get their impression.

  • went on til at least 330 when i fell asleep. moving the bedroom helped though i still had to drown it out with music most of the night.
