nyt architecture critic NICOLAI OUROUSSOFF was on charlie rose last night. I like this guy. among other things he called out daniel liebskind for not having the courage to walk off the job in protest.

Hey, those designer glasses cost money.
- tom moody 12-29-2005 6:06 pm [add a comment]

but ultimately it cost DL his credibility. NO pointed out all the last round choices retained the original commercial content. he pointed out that DL took way too long to realize that those last round choices would be the easiest to manipulated away from his control. that it would be a market statement not an architectural one. he also eluded to "the families" obliquely as a negative force. CR kept bringing up frank gehry and NO kept demurring. except for the disney concert hall. wouldnt outright slam him.

Rose really likes Gehry.

Rose's question about public housing--wtf?
- tom moody 12-29-2005 10:14 pm [add a comment]

I've never watched Rose--so many of his questions are leading, in other words, editorial statements with question marks at the end. Uggh, hate TV, may not be able to finish this.
- tom moody 12-29-2005 10:16 pm [add a comment]

NO is too cautious and political in his answers.
- tom moody 12-29-2005 10:20 pm [add a comment]

Turning off--Rose makes me sick.

notes :

likes new moma. "a conservative building."

when CR brought up bilboa as most significant building of 20c. NO said he doesnt do top tens. switched subject to disney concert hall. "gehrys most conservative building."

on ground zero: said in effect n. fosters design would have thwarted struggle over not giving up control to the architects. instead they used the architects. reference to families was veiled reference to "patriotic notions."

and regarding new orleans: faulted regan prop 13 to dismantle the social infrastructure.

take away impression: he loves zaha and rem. and mentioned that sine now all the big museums and concert halls have been built that we are entering an age of developer buildings. added risk is that architects are used for dressing rather than developing new ideas.

(most of above paraphrased)
- bill 12-29-2005 10:35 pm [add a comment]

  • I think the last point you paraphrase :-) was well made, and important.

Did you think Rose was being very aggressive in his questioning about MoMA and then Gehry? It felt there was something else going on there.
Rose loves MoMA and wanted all the dish on NO's fight with Terry Riley, NO played it safe in his answer. Rose loves Gehry, NO decided to play it safe in his answer.
I was really happy about his comments on Daniel Libeskind though. A needed confirmation, and certainly a final blow.

just saw your posts. charlie looked pretty hungover. jim b does a good charlie rose leading the witness routine. i think ghery must be a friend. and yes clueless on whats new in public housing. NO answer : there is no CLIENT with public housing. we are not building public housing right now. DUH! I did see something good on rural studio recently on mississippi housing. ill find and post.
- bill 12-29-2005 10:39 pm [add a comment]

alabama not mississippi

- bill 12-29-2005 10:46 pm [add a comment]

Duh, indeed. It's like Rose just walked out of a time machine from 40 years ago.

I think you're right Gehry is a buddy, with "questions" like "Bilboa. Most important building of our time?"
- tom moody 12-29-2005 10:49 pm [add a comment]

i dont watch when he has actors, musicians and most writers. that leaves...

- bill 12-29-2005 10:53 pm [add a comment]

"NO is too cautious and political in his answers."

he works for the nyt and has to be a diplomat. its not like hes a blogger!

- bill 12-29-2005 11:01 pm [add a comment]

If he had the same courage he's saying Libeskind lacks, he'd say exactly what he thinks (sorry, media dudes get no sympathy from me.)
- tom moody 12-29-2005 11:12 pm [add a comment]

i find no fault with most of NO's political and esthetic calls. how long would he last at the times if he spoke exactly as he feels? the paper needs an arch critic and so far he's better than the last two they had. the village voice has no arch dept, what exactly are you calling for?
- bill 12-30-2005 10:29 pm [add a comment]

Getting criticism from blogs where everything doesn't have to be vetted to protect tender living architects'/clients' egos.
- tom moody 12-30-2005 10:35 pm [add a comment]

oh, ok.

Hi. I am chiming in late on this. Bill I saw the interview with NO the night it aired. I thought mostly, well, boring. Rose does go a bit crazy, even for him, on the leading questions and cutting in. I think for a newcomer NO does a pretty good job at standing ground (especially CR was a huge fan of Muschamp and he actually considers himself an impresario of architecture. Gossip: Charlie Rose and Amanda Burden were a couple for many years and just broke up - interesting mention. Rose's favorite architects are Frank Gehry and Eisenman). I am not sure I am qualified to go into the public housing question, but I do think Holland and the UK are actually working with good architects on building interesting public housing - and it is an interesting forum for competitions (where the US commissions, and does not open the door to younger architects - or non-gov contracted - in general).
The Zaha statements were interesting and over the top. Rem was her teacher. It is strange she is talked about as the same generation.
For what it is worth.
(Oh, and the night before the NO interview, I fell in love with Reed Hastings on Charlie Rose. I thought of you all and wondered if what he was saying about the internet just sounded good, or if it had merit. If you see a notice for re-broadcast take a look if you have a minute).

On the public housing question, I took it to mean Rose was asking about public housing in the US. I would give him the benefit of a doubt but he was so obnoxious...

He definitely had that air about him of someone who thinks he's mastered a subject.

i can generally tolerate charlie rose's interview technique if i like the interviewee. it was interesting to see how wrong his personal reading on the subject was in this case. really lacking a twenty year update as tom said. since it was his big debut im letting NO off the hook this time with high expectations for the future. ill be less tolerant if he doesnt show the courage he demands of DL. thanks for the inside skinny selma! we are greatly indebted to you, rather clueless without you. ie i had to look up amanda burden. CR asked about planners at one point. happy new year!
