my dad used to occasionally say "Dirty Rackafratz!" instead of cussing in front of us kids. there were only two google hits with "Dirty" included in the search and two pages for "Rackafratz" alone. no real leads on the origin. i have no idea where he got that from. he was a big Walt Kelly fan so it might of come from Pogo. I first came accross variations on &*?#@ in comics, probably Mad. could have started in krazy kat or prior.

- bill 1-07-2005 8:54 pm

My recollection is that the phrase originated in animated 1950's Paper Mate or Parker pen TV commercials. The idea was that the animated person's pen leaked in his shirt pocket, causing intemperate outbursts such as the example and also the shocker, "Pickaluma!" preceded by something like "doggone.." or some such.

There were four Parker Pen curses, but I only remember three:
Blast that Flatterap, Phileramic Packalumer, & Dirty Rackafratz.

  • Sorry it was Papermate not Parker

Hi, I recall the pronouncation as Flameramic pedalumer, (phonetic, who knows about the spelling.

Not sure. But I did find out about representing bad words in comics with punctuation marks since posting this. On the Leonard lopate radio show his guest Patricia t o'connor identified them as grawlix coined by comic artist mort walker. here. And also found additional bad word substitution info here.

great topic, classic lopate topic. I miss LL. for some reason listening online doesn't satisfy the same way, maybe it's that i'm not living in nyc.

I remember the Papermate pens commercials from when I was a kid. As I remember, there were 3 curses: "Ora Fileramic Packaloomer", "Blast that Flaterrap", and "Dirty Ratzafratz". The above descriptions of the commercials are accurate, according to my memory (which, itself, is not that accurate).
- Al G (guest) 4-19-2013 1:53 am [add a comment]

  • If memory serves me (and at my age, that's not an absolute) the genesis of these phrases was a razor blade commercial aired during world series games. To the best of my recollection, the cartoon figure would utter a curse each time he nicked himself. The four "curses" were dirtyratzafratz; pickacosipep, olafigaramapegaloomer and blast that fladerap.

  • I remember this advertisement from when I was 10 years old. The advertisement was for "the new Capri Mark III Papermate Pen with the Piggyback Refill.

This is Ralph (?). He's an even tempered guy. Only two things make him mad. Golf.

(says a curse I could never understand)

    And pens that skip.

    "Oh that pigatalamic tigaloomer!"

    He won't give up golf.

    "Blast that flatterap!"

But he did give up pens that skip when he got a new Capri Mark III from Papermate. Now only one thing makes him mad. Golf.

    "Dirty Whatsafrutz!"

  • I remember this commercial from when I was about 12 years old. Throughout my life it has made me chuckle and helped me stay sane as a golfer. It was the cartoon of a golfer who kept trying to hit his ball out of a sand trap in utter frustration that stuck in my memory. Whenever I hit an especially bad shot I mumble these phrases rather than curse. I remember them as “Blast that flatterap; Odafilaramicpackaloomer; Dirty rotten brackafritz,”

Thanks everyone. I remember that the words came from a commercial but didn't know which one. My dad would say the words with such expression that we would laugh and laugh. Bless his heart. Thanks for the memories.

This has been bugging me for some time, so decided to do a search. The posters who said it was a pen commercial are correct. It originated in the late 1950s or early 1960s (yes, I am that old!). To the best of my recollection, the four phrases were (or sounded like): blast that flatterap, dirty ratzafratz, oda fillerami packaloomer and pergacloshepep. I guess the commercials made a big impression to remember them after all these years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

"pergacloshepep" is the one I don't remember ... yes it was a guy who hated golf and pens that leaked ... amazing that those commercials have become a tiny internet meme in a way after all these years :)

I remember those commercials. I was about 8 or 10 years old. My recollection is that they were for Paper-Mate pens and their new innovation ... the ballpoint pen ... so no more fountain pen leaks in your shirt pocket or all over your work.
The swear words were “blasted flatterap,” “dirty ratzafratz”, and “ragga-fiddlerammy-peckaloomer.” (spelling optional, of course).

I believe the muffled naughty words "filleramic pegaloomer, dirdyratzafratz, and blasatflatterap "were uttered by Dubs Dillworth, trying to hit a golf ball out of a sand trap, unsuccessfully. Can't recall how that sold Gillete Blue Blades though.

I'm thinking the voice that did the "curses" was the voice of Jim Backus. I've looked all over the internet, but I can't find this Papermate pen commercial. I remember it clearly.
- Nancy (guest) 7-09-2019 2:06 pm [add a comment]

Did anyone ever find the video? I’ve been looking all morning, hoping to show a kid why I curse in front of him by saying dirtyrassasfratz, and onofeenypeckleumer. I did remember it was a ball point pen commercial, maybe Parker, maybe Paper Mate. I still have a pretty clear recollection of what it looked like. But I really would like to be able to show him. Should I just give up?

papermate pen animated commercials featured the sports of golf and baseball, an avid and die hard participant in those sports and the two things that really gets him upset; the character's name in both versions was swift wilson; both versions opened with a voice over announcing "only two things make swift wilson mad: [missing putts (swears)] [striking out (swears)] and pens that don't write (swears); (in the golf versions swift wilson is trying to fill out a scorecard; in the baseball version he's trying to sign an autograph);" the voiceover then declares swift wilson's animus toward pens that don't write was cured by his acquisition of a papermate pen, but that missing putts OR striking out still makes him mad; the commercials both end with swift wilson missing a putt or striking out and then uttering the same erzatz cuss phrase: "dirty rotten ruckafrats"

  • I thought the cartoon golfer was named “Whip Willson”? I remember him flailing away at a golf ball in a deep hole in a sand trap “rotten muggafrump” in one commercial. The other mock expletive was “dirty wreckafretch”. but I don’t remember his golf dilemma for that one.

i went bushwhacking through the scrublands of 50s, 60s and 70s commercials which featured animations looking for examples of the paper mate dirty rotten ruckafrats ("drr"); after burning out watching compilations of commercials both live and animated, to date i've had no luck in turning up those hallowed paper mate animations; what i did stumble upon in a compilation of vintage commercials from fred flix begins at 16:22 of the following:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP2W1ai4yYI&ab_channel=FredFlix

that's travis bickle his very own self showing off his new american motors ambassador in 1970, three years before mean streets, six years before taxi driver and thirty-two years before analyze that and paul vitti's auto sales pitch: "look at the size of that trunk; you could fit three bodies in there" . . .

This is a great thread. My brothers and I enjoyed these two commercials with our dad back in the 50’s and 60’s, too watching the Friday Night Fiights boxing matches. One guy was a baseball player, Whip Wilson, who couldn’t hit side, edge or bottom of the ball. Only two things made Dubs mad - Awe all and pens that skip. The other was Dubs Dillworth who dug a 6 foot deep hole trying to hit off the tee. Only two things made Dubs mad - Golf and pens that skip.

PERGAKLOSHICK PEP!

  • seems like a problem and a pressing one at that that i couldnt access the original post from the new comments page even after i posted my comment but found it luckily via search. here i can see the "top of the thread" link but i dont think it was on the new comment thread. probably should just ditch the information architecture and start again.

sorry for destroying the purity of this thread, bill. the late boomer nostalgia generator has been besmirched by 21st century gobbledygook. maybe that will be enough to get it back on track.
