NASA is expected to announce this week that it has proved the existence of "dark energy", a cosmic force that counteracts gravity and will keep the universe expanding forever. The announcement will effectively demolish the theory that life will be wiped out in a "big crunch" when the universe collapses, and should end decades of academic dispute.

Flexcar's fleet of rent by the hour vehicles includes Toyota's gas-electric hybrid Prius. I rented one ($6.50 per hour, flexible rates) for a test spin. Cute, comfortable, quiet, clean and peppy off the line.
.
i saw zipcar advertised in the subway yesterday. seems like it could be a good idea. you pay a monthly fee and then you have access to their cars, which are parked all over the city for $6-12/hour with a maximum per day cost $60-90. which is still cheaper than a rental. no gas, insurance. plus the monthly fee covers your rental charges.

a couple from wired news on past subjects -- the space elevator and nuclear powers role in future space exploration. gotta think that the elevator would become the ultimate target for terrorism.

"AUBURN HILLS, Mich. –– Volkswagen has announced the first long-range test drive of its innovative HY.POWER fuel-cell car. On the same mountainous journey, Volkswagen also successfully tested a high-tech Jetta Turbo Direct Injection diesel using a super-clean synthetic diesel called SunFuel®.
