"WANTED: PERFORMERS/WRITERS/MUSICIANS/ACTIVISTS
This election season, Creative Time and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council invite you to vent, rage, recite poetry, or perform at the Freedom of Expression National Monument. This giant red megaphone mounted atop a flight of stairs, was originally created in 1984 by Laurie Hawkinson, John Malpede, and Erika Rothenberg for Creative Time's Art on the Beach. It is being represented to coincide with this years election season, and will be on view from August 17 through November 13 in downtown New York's Foley Square. The sculpture will give New Yorkers an opportunity to have a significant impact--both by supporting artistic voices and offering the public a platform for dialogue.

We are currently inviting artists of all disciplines to fulfill the work's provocative potential. The speakers and events will be scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime and 4:30pm throughout the fall. Please note, this artwork is open to the public, and we are able to offer promotion of the events on our website, but we cannot offer an honorarium.

Please contact production@creativetime.org if you have a performance that you would like considered for this project."

THE JOSHUA WHITE AND GARY PANTER LIGHT SHOW
July 15-18, 2004

Joshua White – renowned light-show artist and creator of the “Joshua Light Show” at New York City’s legendary Fillmore East – and Gary Panter – groundbreaking painter and comic book artist famed for the design of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse television show – join forces to present a series of live light-altering performances in Anthology’s historic Courthouse Theater.
The rear-projected light show uses many direct, refracted, filtered, reflected, and interrupted light sources to interpret multi-layered prerecorded music and live improvisation. Some of the sources and light-bending apparatus were used in the original “Joshua Light Show.”
The effect is hypnotic, compelling and relaxing: an immersive color and shape experience that can inspire vivid daydreams, personal reflection, and a re-awakening of visual awareness. It is also immensely entertaining.
Each show is a unique live performance, generated by the long-time love of both artists for light abstraction and phenomena.

I'm not usually one to recommend something I haven't experienced first hand... but I am signing up... (and I like what I know about this artist, and a friend, whose judgment I trust, gave it a big two thumbs up) Mr Wilson I wonder if you have seen this? Up through September 13 (apologies if this has already been posted).
"Janet Cardiff's 'Her Long Black Hair' is a 35-minute journey that begins at Central Park South and transforms an everyday stroll in the park into an absorbing psychological and physical experience."
My memory is short, to say the least, but last night Barack Obama gave the best political speech I've ever heard.

I can't find the video yet. If anyone finds it I'd appreciate a pointer...

Fast Company article on Whole Foods CEO John Mackey
Over three months, he gave himself a solo tutorial on modern factory farming. "I read a dozen books about how animals are raised in this country," he says, "going all the way back to Peter Singer's Animal Liberation in 1975. The more I read, the more I was interested in it. I said, Damn, these people are right. This is terrible."

Mackey did two things. He changed his vegetarian diet to vegan (he no longer eats food produced from animals, including dairy products). And he sent Ornelas an email telling her she was right -- not just about ducks, but about chickens, pigs, and cows. Mackey wrote that Whole Foods would immediately begin using its influence and buying power to demand that the meat it sells comes from animals that have been treated with a measure of dignity before being slaughtered. He invited Ornelas to help.
Is this guy insane?
Sitting in his office in 2004, he says without hesitation, "Twenty years from now, factory farms will be illegal in the United States."
