Cave Drops Hints to Earliest Glass of Red
By PAM BELLUCK: January 11, 2011

Scientists have reported finding the oldest known winemaking operation, about 6,100 years old, complete with a vat for fermenting, a press, storage jars, a clay bowl and a drinking cup made from an animal horn. Grape seeds, dried pressed grapes, stems, shriveled grapevines and residue were also found, and chemical analyses indicate red wine was produced there.

The discovery, published online Tuesday in The Journal of Archaeological Science, occurred in a cave in Armenia where the team of American, Armenian and Irish archaeologists recently found the oldest known leather shoe. The shoe, a laced cowhide moccasin possibly worn by a woman with a size-7 foot, is about 5,500 years old
Looks like the Verizon iPhone will finally be announced on January 11th. Good bet to go on sale February 3rd. Ken, your long wait is over (although now Android handsets are so good that Verizon/Apple isn't the world beating dream team it once would have been.) Still, I expect them to sell the heck out of it. I'll be curious if Apple was able to keep 100% of the power like they did with AT&T, or whether Verizon will be able to screw things up with their own software add-ons.

Portland Value's (in one top ten report)

Metrovino’s Seafood Chowder: True, I first encountered this sensational soup in 2009, but I return periodically to slurp of its goodness and fortify my ravaged soul. Fatty smoked bacon adrift in a sea of oysters, clams, tuna, and halibut for $5. Why aren’t you eating it now?

Miho Izakaya For sheer menu audacity, I have to give it up for the little Japanese pub on N Interstate. The ingredients are always cracking fresh, and the 25 or so small-plate offerings ($2-10) are not only uniformly tasty, but extremely interesting to boot. The slow-cooked pork, spicy noodles, and beguiling fish entrees will reel you in and turn you into a homing pigeon for this coop.

(S/E have you eaten at Red Onion Thai Cuisine??)
To evaluate streaming video, I've got a few devices. A first gen ipod touch, an ipad, a moto droid, etc. I'm going to get a Ubuntu/Intel Atom netbook for the low end of the "computer" space. At the other end, I want a no-holds-barred mobile platform that will let me see the limitations of the encoder & server (not the client). Edging out the HP Envy and 15" Sony, I got a Dell XPS 15 ... i5, 8 GB dual channel memory, 1 GB graphics memory, advanced N wifi, slightly more than 720p display, HDMI output, wireless display driver, bluray disc, speakers that are rated very highly. All for under $1.5 k. It will be bigger and badder in every performance dimension (except hard disk capacity) than any machine I've got. It will probably run circles around the Mac Pro that I got in 2008 (except disk capacity and pro video outputs). But I don't get it for a month. (Insert sad face.)

LAST WEEK
Steve DiBenedetto, Who Wants to Know?, closes Saturday, January 8th. Don't miss it!

VILLAGE VOICE, Dec. 22nd -
Ever watch an amusement park at night with your eyes dilated by good dope? That's how it feels to stand in front of Steve DiBenedetto's recent paintings and drawings. Much less representational than earlier efforts, the new works present complex, vaguely mechanical systems of spirals, blobs, angular constructions, and tangled tubing—all connected and glowing like neon.

When DiBenedetto's favorite subjects (octopus, helicopter, building) do occasionally make an appearance, as in Spiral, they're pretty much overwhelmed by the dream-state kaleidoscope. Yet for all the chaos of line, form, and loose brushwork, he keeps things under control with the careful placement of pinks, oranges, yellows, and greens, expertly balancing their vibrancy like a latter-day Fauvist. - Robert Shuster
